Day 4
Day 4
Jebel Shams
Today you have a free day in the area. In terms of nature this is perhaps the most beautiful area in Oman. Jebel Shams has the nickname ‘mountain of the Sun’ because there are always rays of sunlight somewhere in the gaps of the gorges.
In the morning you can start with the balcony walk, a hike along the cliffs with a spectacular view. If you are afraid of heights then you might have to think twice before starting this walk because the gorge is 1500 meters deep! The total duration of the walk is around 3 hours. If you also want to experience Jebel Akhdar you can drive in the afternoon to the famous Hajar Mountains. Keep in mind that the drive to Jebel Akhdar is roughly 2,5 hours from Jebel Shams. Jebel Akhdar is also known as de green mountain and a great place for rock climing or walk the three village trail; an easy hike at high altitude, following old paths that link mountain villages. Admire terraced farmland and acient falaj irrigation systems, a great way to experience the western Hajar Moutains. You can also visit several special places in the area such as the Diana Point or the Saiq Plateau.

Past Ras Al Hadd the road turns south and comes down from the cliffs to sea level, along wide stretches of beach and you will pass numerous fishing villages.
Close to the town of Filim, the Sugar Dunes of Al Khaluf truly live up to their name, with a vast expanse of white sand dunes stretching all the way to the coast. The great advantage of wildcamping is that you can choose any spot you want! In Oman you can legally wildcamp anywhere.
