Itinerary

Jebel Shams

Today you have a free day in the area. In terms of nature this is perhaps the most beautiful area in Oman. Jebel Shams has the nickname ‘mountain of the Sun’ because there are always rays of sunlight somewhere in the gaps of the gorges.

In the morning you can start with the balcony walk, a hike along the cliffs with a spectacular view. If you are afraid of heights then you might have to think twice before starting this walk because the gorge is 1500 meters deep! The total duration of the walk is around 3 hours. If you also want to experience Jebel Akhdar you can drive in the afternoon to the famous Hajar Mountains. Keep in mind that the drive to Jebel Akhdar is roughly 2,5 hours from Jebel Shams. Jebel Akhdar is also known as de green mountain and a great place for rock climing or walk the three village trail; an easy hike at high altitude, following old paths that link mountain villages. Admire terraced farmland and acient falaj irrigation systems, a great way to experience the western Hajar Moutains. You can also visit several special places in the area such as the Diana Point or the Saiq Plateau.

Sur - Ras Al Ruwais wildcamping

Today you start with the most adventurous part of your trip, the coastal road from Sur all the way to Salalah in the south of Oman. In the next few days you will drive more than 1000 kilometers, wildcamping will be alternated with an accommodation every now and then.

Today you will pass through Mahout and the extensive dune fields of the Wahiba Sands. You head towards Ras Al Ruwais, just north of the bay at Al Kahluf. Past Ras Al Hadd the road turns south and comes down from the cliffs to sea level, along wide stretches of beach and you will pass numerous fishing villages.

Close to the town of Filim, the Sugar Dunes of Al Khaluf truly live up to their name, with a vast expanse of white sand dunes stretching all the way to the coast. The great advantage of wildcamping is that you can choose any spot you want! In Oman you can legally wildcamp anywhere. If you leave in the morning, you will be at your destination around noon and you can set up the tent. You will have enough time to enjoy this beautiful beach area near Ras Al Ruwais and you can also snorkel or swim here.

Ash Shuwaymiyah - Mirbat - Sumhuram - Taqah hand in rental car

After breakfast and cleaning up the campsite it is time to hit the road again. Today you will travel the palm-lined coastline of Taqah through the fishing villages Sadah and Hasik before you arrive in Taqah. First stop is Mirbat, a town with historical significance. This was the scene of fierce fighting during the 1970s, when communists fought a war of indepence from the rest of Oman. Little has been preserved from these hostile times but you can visit the tomb of Bin Ali which is shaped as two unions!

After Mirbat you can make a stop at Sumhuram archaeological park. This is the place where you can find the ruin of the castle of Queen Sheba, the queen of the former Kingdom of Eritrea.

In the evening you will arrive in Taqah, your final destination. In the last few days you have driven over 1500 kilometers along the coast from Sur to the government Dhofar. You will drop off the car at your accommodation.

Taqah - Ubar - Wadi Malhit start desert expedition with guide

In the morning the guide will pick you up at your accommodation in Taqah, he will have camping gear and food and drinks for the next few days ready. It is going to be a special trip which not many tourist make, to the empty quarter desert of Dhofar. First stop is the Jebel Qara Moutains where you can enjoy a hike and visit one of the many wadi’s in the area. Next stop is Ubar, the city is mentioned as the former trading center of the Rub al-Khali desert. It is described as a rich city because of the trade with the coastal towns. However, the legend goes that Ubar, also called “the lost city of Atlantis”, has been destroyed by a natural disaster or as a punishment by God. The city has sunk in the sand after a vision of King Shaddad. He ignored a warning from the prophet, who then made the city disappear.

At the end of the day it is time to set up your tent in Wadi Malhit, a region known for its black camels. During dinner, you will enjoy a campfire and listen to the Bedouin stories.

Wadi Malhit - Al Hashman desert expedition with guide

In the early morning you will continue your adventure through the Rub Al Khali desert. Today you will be completely immersed in the greatness of the desert. You are going to drive on sand dunes at a height of 200 meters towards Al Hashman. You will spend a full day in the Empty Quarter, more off the grid then this is impossible.

During the sunset you are completely immersed in the desert lifestyle. You set up your tent and have a typical local meal in the evening.

Salalah

From Salalah you can make several trips or enjoy one of the many beaches nearby. Do not miss Wadi Darbat, one of the most beautiful and green wadis in the area.
