Itinerary

Arrival in Muscat (Oman) including meet & assist and airport transfer

After your flight you will meet one of our local representatives at Muscat International Airport. You will be welcomed and the driver will take you to your accommodation in Muscat.

Muscat optional with city tour

Muscat is the capital of Oman and is characterized by the many white houses, which is why Muscat is also called the “white city”. Over the centuries Muscat has been ruled over by various indigenous tribes and foreign powers such as the Portuguese and the Persians. For more than 50 years Qaboos bin Said was sultan of Oman until he died in january 2020. Sultan Qaboos was well loved in Oman. He was never married, didn’t have children and he hadn’t appointed his successor in the event of his death. The Omanis feared for their future without a leader who would follow in the footsteps of the Sultan. After 50 family members debated who would become his succesor, his causin, 65 year old Haitham Bin Tariq minister of Heritage and Culture, was elected to take his place.

Today you can visit various highlights of the city such as the souq in Muttrah and the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. In this centrally located area of Muscat you can also visit the work palace of the sultan and the royal opera house. If you want to attend a performance at the opera house, we can make a reservation for you. A visit to the Royal Opera House is a chance to be among the local citizens who are dressed elegantly for one of the performances. In the evening you can have dinner at the Caramel restaurant close to the Opera House.

Muscat - Nakhl - Rustaq - Bilad Sayt - Jebel Shams meeting local employee & pick up rental car

After breakfast your 4WD-jeep is ready and you will meet one of our local employees. He will give you a brief instruction about the car and the route you are going to drive. The first major stop on the Rustaq route is the small town of Nakhal. The town is home to one of many historical forts of Oman. You can visit the Nakhl Fort and the hot springs of Thowarah, from Nakhl you have a beautiful view over de palmtrees. The name ‘Thowarah’ derives from the Arabic word to ‘boil’, though there is no danger of third degree burns here as the springs are pleasantly warm.

After this visit you head towards Rustaq where you can stop at the fortresses of the city for a beautiful view of the green surroundings. You will drive a route called ‘Wadi Bani Awf’, an off-road route towards the old town of Bilad Sayt. This is an off-the-beaten track road, the most exciting and beautiful route of Oman!

Late in the afternoon you will head to Jebel Shams for your overnight stay in the mountain area. If you choose to stay at Jebel Akhdar, we will adjust this route slightly.

Jebel Shams

Today you have a free day in the area. In terms of nature this is perhaps the most beautiful area in Oman. Jebel Shams has the nickname ‘mountain of the Sun’ because there are always rays of sunlight somewhere in the gaps of the gorges.

In the morning you can start with the balcony walk, a hike along the cliffs with a spectacular view. If you are afraid of heights then you might have to think twice before starting this walk because the gorge is 1500 meters deep! The total duration of the walk is around 3 hours. If you also want to experience Jebel Akhdar you can drive in the afternoon to the famous Hajar Mountains. Keep in mind that the drive to Jebel Akhdar is roughly 2,5 hours from Jebel Shams. Jebel Akhdar is also known as de green mountain and a great place for rock climing or walk the three village trail; an easy hike at high altitude, following old paths that link mountain villages. Admire terraced farmland and acient falaj irrigation systems, a great way to experience the western Hajar Moutains. You can also visit several special places in the area such as the Diana Point or the Saiq Plateau.

Jebel Shams - Al Hamra - Bahla - Nizwa

Today you wake up on the highest mountain of Oman, Jebel Shams. It is time to head back to the trading city of Nizwa. This old city used to be an important city for the trade in silver, cattle and other merchandise. Nowadays, the city still has a central function for the region. The weekly market for livestock takes place here. You can visit the historic center and the oldest fortress of the Sultanate.

Along the way you will first pass the city of Hamra, which is surrounded by date plantations. Here you can also find the Al Hoota Cave, an extensive cave system that is worth visiting!

After visiting Hamra you will drive to Bahla, where you can visit the Bahla Fort. This fort was built in the third century BC and includes an oasis of traditional souks, old alleys and mosques. The fort is surrounded by a wall of thirteen kilometers long. Located on the highest point of the oasis, you have a beautiful view from the fort. Afterwards you continue your way towards your final destination for today: Nizwa.

Nizwa

Nizwa is one of the largest cities in Oman and is located about 165 kilometers from Muscat. Until the 12th century, it was the capital of Oman. Due to the modernization of the city it has partly lost its original state and is now the center for trade, religion, art and education. Nizwa is famous for the cattle market which takes place each Friday early in the morning. This market still resembles a Medieval spectacle and takes you back in time. Goats, chickens, cows and other animals are traded on this cattle market. A must see when you are in Nizwa on friday.

Another attraction in Nizwa is Nizwa Fort, one of the oldest in the Sultanate dating back to the 17th century, it is an important reminder of the turbulent periods in Oman’s history. If you stand on top of the Fortress you have a beautiful view of the city.

Nizwa - Mintarib - Wadi Bani Khalid - Sur optional excursion turtle sanctuary Ras al-Jinz

Today you leave the trading city called Nizwa and head to the coast. You can make a short stop at Wadi Bani Khalid. This Wadi is known for its clear waters and green nature. You can walk all the way and swim your way down. This way down is a lot faster and above all it is a fun experience!

In the afternoon it is time to drive toward Sur or Ras Al Jinz, depending on your chosen accommodation. In Sur you can visit the Dhow factory. Sur maintains its old heritage, not only in looks, but in many of the industrial activities that still function much the way they used to, from fishing to dhow making.

Ras Al Jinz is 1 hour from Sur and the only place along the coast where you can witness the seaturtles moving on the beach towards the ocean with one of the certified rangers within the nature reserve.

Sur - Ras Al Ruwais wildcamping

Today you start with the most adventurous part of your trip, the coastal road from Sur all the way to Salalah in the south of Oman. In the next few days you will drive more than 1000 kilometers, wildcamping will be alternated with an accommodation every now and then.

Today you will pass through Mahout and the extensive dune fields of the Wahiba Sands. You head towards Ras Al Ruwais, just north of the bay at Al Kahluf. Past Ras Al Hadd the road turns south and comes down from the cliffs to sea level, along wide stretches of beach and you will pass numerous fishing villages.

Close to the town of Filim, the Sugar Dunes of Al Khaluf truly live up to their name, with a vast expanse of white sand dunes stretching all the way to the coast. The perfect spot to stock up on groceries for the upcoming wildcamping night.

However, the legend goes that Ubar, also called “the lost city of Atlantis”, has been destroyed by a natural disaster or as a punishment by God. The city has sunk in the sand after a vision of King Shaddad. He ignored a warning from the prophet, who then made the city disappear.
